Thin Provisioning (QThin)

Dynamic Size Just-in-Time & Just-Enough

QThin refers to allocating data on demand. The volume consumes a small amount of storage and increases as more data is written to disk. Therefore, QThin can significantly help reduce your total cost of ownership.

Policy-based Automatic Space Reclamation

QThin uses zero reclamation technology to recycle unused storage blocks to provide greater efficiency and a higher utilization rate.

Lower Initial Investment in Drives

Don’t need to buy a large number of disks to manage data growth confidently. Start with the minimal number of disks, and then bring additional drives online as capacity demand grows.

Online Storage Pool Expansion & Fully-integrated

The capacity of the storage pool can be expanded online by adding more disk groups with zero downtime. QThin can also seamlessly integrate and interact with other QSAN storage features.

Thin provisioning is a method of optimizing the efficiency with which the available space is utilized in SAN networks. In computing, thin provisioning involves using virtualization technology to give the appearance of having more physical resources than are actually available. Thin provisioning (QThin) operates by allocating disk storage space in a flexible manner among multiple users, based on the minimum space required by each user at any given time. QThin uses our advanced storage pool architecture to achieve this functionality. The capacity of the storage pool is shared by all volumes inside the pool. This means that the XCubeSAN is able to support more host servers with a fewer number of hard drives, thereby reducing initial acquisition cost. As the storage pool fills, you can add extra disk groups to expand the storage pool capacity without downtime.

SSD Cache (QCache)

Accelerate the Applications Data Access Time

Up to

92

Times of Random Read

Up to

171

Times of Random Write

Increasing the overall random IOPS and lowering the costs by using only few SSD drives. QCache technology can improve random read performance by up to 92 times and random write by up to 171 times.

Auto Tiering (QTiering)

Put the Right Data at the Right Place in the Right Time

Intelligent algorithm behind QTiering manages the data relocation and monitors the data hotness ratio using half-life coefficient and advanced ranking mathematics. It optimizes the application performance without straining your budget or sacrificing capacity.

From the perspective of storage features, the performance of SSDs are high, but the cost is also high per GB. Relatively speaking, the cost of a traditional hard drive is low, so as performance is relatively poor. If we follow the 80/20 rule to configure storage systems, all-SSD configurations are unreasonable for all but the most intensive applications. On the other hand, the data itself has a lifecycle. As the age of the data increases, it is accessed less often. Therefore, to balance performance and cost factors, adapting a hybrid storage architecture with a mixture of SSDs and traditional HDDs seem to be the most reasonable approach for modern IT environments. An automated tiering pool is a simple and elegant solution for dynamically matching storage requirements with changes in the frequency of data access.
